Three men, one boat (and a dog)

I finally finished Jerome K Jerome’s (I’d kill to be called that) often referenced tale of a Victorian lark up the Thames. Plenty of parts are laugh-out-loud funny, at least by my low standards, and the period nature of the book (seen from current times) merely adds to the humour. There’s factual references to things [...]

New definition of ‘teenage’

A somewhat novel definition of teenage, on the BBC news website.

Driving North

There were two photo-worthy spectacles from the drive up the M1/A1 yesterday – the first I couldn’t easily stop to capture, but consisted of very thin but dense layer of fog around Durham – not even as thick as the tree-tops, just sitting on the ground in the hollows. A really great, eerie sight. The second spectacle [...]

Watchmen

is excellent from start to finish. I can understand why people unfamiliar with the novel might find it a little long / slow in the first half, but for someone who’s read the book it treads a careful line between carbon-copying the original plot (which might lead to a five-hour epic, take note Mr Jackson) [...]

Rome

Having now seen all of series one (years after everyone else, but never mind), I’m in full agreement that it’s awesome, despite the historical liberties taken. I don’t understand why the BBC haven’t promoted it more heavily, since their name is prominent in the credits, and presumably they stumped up a fair chunk of cash. [...]

I’m referring specifically to items which are not (unduly) supply constrained, which is not the case for collectibles and the like – the items in question are generally mass-produced goods [...]

Victorian Humor

Finally watched Topsy-Turvy, the film about the infamous duo’s creation of the Mikado, and the events leading up to it. While watching the film I was nervous about how many liberties had been taken with accuracy, but apparently a fair amount of research went into it. The film is jam-packed with excellent performances from all [...]

Ultraviolet

No, not the film, but slightly older Channel 4 TV drama from 1998. A six part mini-series about those pesky blood drinkers, classically British, with an excellent cast and extremely dark setting – no witty Joss Wheedon one-liners here. There’s a decent blend of science, action and drama – occasionally crossing the line into techno-babble, [...]
